Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them. (Psalm 49:16-17)

God is calling out to people from all walks of life. He is calling out to those who have status and those who don’t. He is calling out to those with money and those who are short on it. His words of wisdom transcend societal barriers and what comes from His heart will give you understanding irrespective of social standing.

He speaks in proverbs and riddles but those who believe in Him and follow Him will be given understanding. Those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches hold no threat since for all their money, they cannot save themselves from the inevitable destruction that awaits sinners. They cannot pay God with money in order to gain eternal life. Salvation is free for all who believe.

It is no secret that all people will die –whether they were wise or foolish; poor or rich. For the wealthy, their death means that all their wealth is given to another. He dies just like anyone else –with nothing.

God is the One who redeems us from death and takes us to Himself, so there is no point in becoming overawed when someone climbs the career ladder, the social ladder of whatever other earthly ladder. Such a one can take none of his accolades, achievements or possessions with him to the grave. All his so-called splendor will part from him at the grave.

He may have called himself blessed while alive and received the praises of people when he prospered, but he will yet see death. A person who thinks these things make him something in God’s eyes is a person without understanding.

God wants us to be free from being overwhelmed by the possessions and success of others. He wants us to stay focused. He wants us to focus on what matters for all eternity: The salvation of our souls. Although we do not envy others their success; their portion given to them by God, we may be in danger of losing sight of salvation which matters far more than these things.

Salvation is free. It’s uncomplicated. It’s given to us apart from the requirements of social standing and intellect.

“God has put the offer of salvation in such a way that the whole world can lay hold of it. All men can believe. A lame man might not perhaps be able to visit the sick, but he can believe. A blind man by reason of his infirmity cannot do many things, but he can believe. A deaf man can believe. A dying man can believe. God has put salvation so simply that young and old, the wise and the foolish, the rich and the poor, can all believe if they will.” Dwight Lyman Moody
